Monday 10th October is World Porridge Day 2016. Today, Lady Lynne and I are posting our #PorridgeSmiles pictures and texting ‘OATS16 £2’ to 70070 to provide a hungry child with school meals for a month. I'm asking YOU my Neil's Healthy Meals readers to donate too and to bring a smile to a hungry child, with porridge!

World Porridge Day 2016 aims to raise awareness of the role that porridge plays at Mary's Meals projects in Malawi.

A daily mug of maize-based 'likuni phala' is provided as an incentive for children to go to school.

What this means is that chronically poor children are attracted to the classroom where they can gain a basic education that can provide an escape route from poverty.

It's no secret that Lady Lynne and I are huge lovers of Scotland's traditional national dish, porridge.

So when Mary's Meals alerted us to the crisis in Malawi, and how we can help just by creating our #PorridgeSmiles pictures and then texting ‘OATS16 £2’ to 70070 to provide a hungry child with school meals for a month there were no questions to ask.

A horrible combination of floods and drought throughout Southern Africa has devastated crops.

Many families are on the brink of starvation. It’s only set to get worse over the coming months.

During this time of crisis, the daily meal Mary’s Meals provides is not just a powerful incentive to come to school – but a vital lifeline for vulnerable children in desperate need of nourishment.

All you need to do to help is Text ‘OATS16 £2’ to 70070 if you're a UK reader.

Or, if you're a reader from anywhere else in the world then please visit Mary's Meals to donate.

Please help to provide a nutritious daily meal to more than 1.1 million of the world’s poorest children every day they attend school.

Thank you to stoats for being the official porridge partner of World Porridge Day 2016.

And please help. Your contribution is vital.

        That's true Shashi.

We are always celebrating some kind of food holiday / festival aren't we? But yes this one is definitely different and much needed too.

        Thanks for your support. 🙂
