Nine cherry bakewell flapjack squares on a chopping board. Pin title text overlay at top.

Delicious cherry bakewell flapjacks. These easy to make baked oat bars are made from porridge oats, filled with cherry jam and topped with flaked almonds.

Cherry bakewell flapjacks cut into 9 squares on a chopping board with a teaspoon of cherry jam in front. Cup of tea and jar of jam in the background.

Folks as you know I'm a huge lover of anything cherry bakewell so today's cherry bakewell flapjack recipe shouldn't come as anything of a surprise.

But I know you love these delicious flavours too. I've known that ever since the amazing popularity of my cherry bakewell loaf cake!

Now I'll admit that flapjacks aren't the most healthy food. They usually use golden syrup as a binder in the recipe.

However just like in my recent easy healthier flapjacks recipe I've removed the syrup and replaced it with honey instead.

So whilst this still isn't a completely healthy cherry bakewell flapjack recipe it is at least slightly healthier than the other bakewell flapjack recipes you might see.

There's absolutely no loss of taste or flavour here either. You still get the sweet cherry flavour and the chewy flapjack texture you would expect!

It's basically a bakewell tart flapjack!

Birds eye view of a chopping board of 9 cherry bakewell flapjacks.

Let's not forget the almonds here either. I mean bakewell tarts wouldn't be without those would they?

These cherry bakewell flapjacks are packed full of ground almonds and almond extract and topped with crunchy flaked almonds.

The delicious almond smell whilst baking is intoxicating!

Not only is this is such a delicious recipe to taste but it's just a joy to bake too!

Enjoy these almond flapjacks with your morning coffee or afternoon cuppa.

They make a perfect picnic treat or kids lunch box snack.

Make sure to add them to your list of sweet treat recipes!

    Step 6 & 7

    • Spoon half of the oat mixture into the prepared baking tin and press down all over.

Rest of the oat mixture spooned over the jam and then sprinked with flaked almonds.

    Step 8

Baked cherry bakewell slab in square cake tin removed from oven.

    Step 9 & 10

    • Bake for about 20 minutes on the middle shelf of your oven until golden brown.
    • Remove from oven, mark into 9 squares whilst still hot, then remove from the pan when cool and using a sharp knife carve into 9 squares.

    Substitutions

Unsalted Butter or Cooking Margarine - use vegan butter if you want to make this vegan.

Soft Light Brown Sugar - you could substitute with dark brown sugar but light is best.

Honey - a budget runny honey is fine. You could use maple syrup or agave syrup.

Porridge Oats - a budget bag of breakfast porridge oats is fine. Don't use quick cooking oats or jumbo oats It's rolled oats you want to use here.

    Ground Almonds - essential

Almond Extract - you could use almond essence instead but extract is better.

Cherry Jam - any kind of good cherry jam is fine. I use Morello Cherry Conserve.

Flaked Almonds - you could omit but it would be a shame to.

Three squares of cherry bakewell flapjacks on a plate with the rest of the cut squares on a chopping board in the background.

    FAQ's

How long do bakewell flapjacks last?

The flapjacks will keep in an airtight container for up to 10 days. They are best kept cool and can be stored in the fridge which will help them hold their shape.

Why have my flapjacks fallen apart?

Slicing them into squares whilst they're still warm can often cause them to fall apart. Instead, score the slab in the tin into 9 squares and then place the tin in the fridge. This will cool them quicker and help them hold their shape.

Why are my flapjacks dry and crumbly?

If the mixture continues to be crumbly then you may have to increase slightly the amount of honey in the mixture until you get a lovely chewy texture.

    Can I freeze flapjacks?

You can freeze flapjacks. Wrap each square in plastic wrap and place it in the freezer. Ensure it's thoroughly defrosted before eating.

    Are flapjacks healthy for you?

A traditional flapjack will usually contain high levels of sugar, syrup and butter. Whilst those amounts are reduced or removed in these are healthier flapjacks they should still be enjoyed as a tasty treat in moderation. The cherry bakewell flapjack calories are 232 calories per slice.

Great substitution with the honey here, Neil! Honey, almonds and cherries all pair so well together...I can almost taste how good these bars would be! And your suggestion about packing these in a lunchbox is a great one. I should make a batch for Robbie's school snacks next week. The only problem is Dad might eat 'em all first...haha!

They are very tempting to be able to control oneself, I will agree with you there! Ha ha! We have to ration ourselves whenever I make baking like this. If you make some for Robbie's school snacks you might have to make them for all his school friends too!

Cherry bakewells are a favourite, thanks Michelle. But I think you were expecting pancakes as you call pancakes flapjacks in the U.S! Ha ha! 🙂

I also do that regularly replacing golden syrup with honey, yes because its healthier but more importantly I can adjust the flavours based on the honey type I use, here we have the Rewarewa type which is awarded as The Best Tasting Honey in the World, sometimes if I cant find that we use honeysuckle, Golden syrup is nowhere near the flavours of these two. That bakewell tart looks really good, definitely will be making that one and I guess the best honey for that will be the Thyme Honey or Multiflora which will bring out the best of the cherry flavour

Oh that best tasting honey in the world sounds amazing Raymund! That's really lucky that you have different kinds of honey to try. They certainly would give you different flavours for these cherry bakewell flapjacks. Lovely!

These cherry flapjacks look terrific - really great combination of oats, almonds, and cherries. And I love these bars are not overly sweet (But I won't be able to stop after eating one slice, I am afraid haha.) Still need to explore flapjack!
