Folks, here I show you how to make your own homemade coleslaw without all the unnecessary unhealthy additions you might get in a shop bought version.

Supermarket coleslaw dressing often contains added sugar, salt and unhealthy hydrogenated oils.

Just check out the ingredient labels yourself next time you're in your local store if you don't believe me!

The best decision is to make your own homemade coleslaw and a healthy dressing yourself.

That way you can be sure you get the greatest health benefits. Avoiding those unhealthy unnecessary ingredients.

Besides, coleslaw really is relatively simple, fun and easy to make!

This coleslaw recipe still has the same great taste as classic full fat coleslaw too!

To make your own easy healthier coleslaw you need red and white heads of cabbage, red onion and a couple of carrots.

For my recipe I also added in some chopped up spring onions that needed used up.

I made the lower calorie dressing with reduced fat mayonnaise. Then combined that with other store cupboard condiments.

It's easy enough to assemble this bowl of tasty coleslaw together in minutes.

However if you can prepare it a few hours in advance that gives all the flavours time to marinate making it even better!

Coleslaw is also easy on the budget too. It makes an excellent "filler".

That means you don't have to go overboard buying lots of different kinds of meats at your BBQ. .

Whilst this easy healthier coleslaw is perfect for your BBQ's or salad, it's perfect for all year round too!

If you've got any left over then there are so many other ways you could use it up, such as......

Don't know why I've never thought to put red cabbage in my coleslaw.

It always amazes me how easy it is to make homemade coleslaw. I love serving coleslaw with all sorts of summer meals, but I'd have to say smoked meats (pulled pork, smoked brisket, etc.) are my favorites. Put a big pile of coleslaw on the plate next to that, and I'll be a happy camper! This healthier version sounds awesome, too, Neil...we're planning on having friends over for a backyard cookout soon, so I'll have to keep this recipe in mind! Yum!

I'm drooling at the thought of piling this coleslaw up high on pulled pork or smoked brisket David. Especially between a burger bun too. Yum!

What time do you want me over for your backyard cookout? 😉

I like your recipe, but I can’t use low-calorie mayonnaise. Just can’t. So I guess I’ll stick with the higher calorie version, which is probably why i need to lose weight! But I like the other ingredients!

Ha ha, mixed with those other ingredients I still think you would get a great sauce for your coleslaw Mimi. Albeit not a lower calorie version. 🙂

Coleslaw is totally a fav. Part of the essential summer side dish trifecta of potato salad, pasta salad, and coleslaw!

It is crazy the way just a few simple ingredients can create such amazing flavour. I absolutely love coleslaw in my burgers, using it instead of lettuce and tomato. Thank you for this healthier version of coleslaw Neil, it looks like a great recipe and I cannot wait to try it out too.

Thanks Ashika. The weather has turned a bit stormy here, but we're hoping that the summer will return again for us to enjoy many more burgers done on the BBQ and then topped with this Coleslaw! 😀

I lke simple and light dressings because why use up a lot of calories in a dressing when you can eat more food and dessert instead? Love this version, Neil!

Absolutely Ben! If we can get the same flavour and taste from a lighter dressing, why not go ahead and do that? Then yes that means in balance we can have a piece of cake or perhaps a glass of wine! 😀

Neil, you sure are right - all those store bought coleslaw dressings are so fat laden AND have hard-to-pronounce ingredients in them, but your healthier option sounds wonderful AND i can read all the ingredients in it! My mom loves coleslaw so I am going to have to share this with her!
