Now before I get all the comments, I know that traditional shepherd's pie is made with lamb.

However, hear me out! Beef is more available and less expensive so I chose to make my easy shepherd's pie with beef instead.

Also you can buy leaner beef mince with virtually all the fat removed so this is a healthier shepherd's pie recipe.

But if you want to make this the traditional way then feel free to use lamb mince instead!

Or if you want to use turkey mince then check out my shepherd's pie with turkey mince recipe.

I've made this shepherd's pie with ground beef mince and frozen vegetables.

I chose frozen vegetables rather than fresh because they're usually cheaper and involve less preparation and effort.

You could also make this shepherd's pie with canned vegetables too.

With everything going up in cost recently I'm all about cooking everything as cheaply but still as healthy as possible.

This pie is really satisying and packed with healthy ingredients.

👪 Why You Should Make This Easy Shepherd's Pie

    • Time-Saving: By using frozen vegetables we remove the need for time-consuming prep work like washing, peeling, and chopping fresh vegetables.
    • Convenience: Frozen vegetables are cheap and available all year-round. This means you can make shepherd's pie with whatever vegetables you like regardless of the season or what's in your fridge!
    • Nutrient Retention: Though there may be slight variations between different vegetables and specific nutrients, frozen vegetables still retain most of their nutritional value.
    • Less Food Waste: Frozen vegetables have a longer shelf life compared to fresh ones and are kept in a bag in the freezer. So they won't go bad before you use them helping to minimise food waste.
    • Low Cost: Frozen vegetables are usually cheaper than fresh and still have a great texture and taste, ensuring that your shepherd's pie turns out delicious every time you make it!

This is a perfect winter warmer and comfort! My husband is a huge fan of ground meat, but not so much of potatoes...might use winter squashes or carrots instead.

You could definitely use a mashed squash or perhaps cauliflower mash instead of the potato Angie. Thanks!

Shepherd's pie is such lovely comfort food! Now if I really wanted to cut the time off this recipe, I'd also use flakes to make the mashed potatoes, Would that be heretical?
