Not only is it delicious but it's extremely versatile too.
I've served it up in so many ways.
It goes down well as a brunch and also as a dinner served with a green and tomato salad.
It's great too cut up into petite little squares and served as a hors d’oeuvre dinner party course.
And you can even eat this goats cheese puff pastry tart cold. Maybe as part of a picnic or even a packed lunch!

Today though, for this goats cheese tart I used puff pastry to give the recipe extra bulk.
You could of course use filo pastry if you wanted to instead and layer those sheets to give it more extra bulk.

Step By Step Instructions
Detailed instructions are in the recipe card below. But here is a quick step by step guide of how to make this goats cheese puff pastry tart recipe:
Steps 1 & 2
- Pre-heat Oven 200C Fan.
- Roll out the pastry onto a baking sheet / tray. Score an edge and prick the pastry using a fork a few times.
Step 3
- Heat the olive oil. Sauté the onion then add the mushrooms and garlic and cook until the mushrooms are soft.
Step 4
- Spread the mushroom mixture over the pastry avoiding the edges.
Step 5
- Sprinkle over the grated goat’s cheese. Season with salt and pepper.
Step 6
- Brush the edge with a little olive oil.
Step 7
- Bake in the top of your oven or until pastry has risen, turned golden brown and cheese has melted. Oven cooking times may vary.
Step 8
- Serve with a green or tomato salad.
Substitutions
- Puff Pastry - I use ready rolled puff pastry sheets for convenience. You can use any puff pastry you want though. Or even make your own.
- Olive Oil - cooking olive oil is fine. You could also use vegetable oil.
- Onion - you could use shallots instead.
- White Mushrooms - I just use ordinary white mushrooms but any kind will work.
- Garlic Cloves - the garlic needs to be fresh.
- Goats Cheese - although I use grated hard goats cheese most other kinds of grated hard cheese will work as well but you might not get the same flavours.

Can I Make My Puff Pastry Tart In Advance?
Yes you can make this goats cheese puff pastry tart in advance prior to baking. You can store it in the fridge for about a day. Allow it to return to room temperature before baking.
How To Store?
As the pastry can become soggy if left too long after baking I do not recommend storing the pastry tart. It's best served straight away after baking.
Can You Freeze?
No. I do not recommend freezing this pastry tart.

Equipment
Ingredients
- 325 g puff pastry sheet ready rolled.
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion thinly sliced.
- 400 g white mushrooms sliced.
- 2 cloves garlic crushed.
- 100 g hard goat’s cheese grated.
- Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200C fan.
- Roll out the pastry and place it on a baking sheet / tray. Score an edge, about 2cm around the puff pastry. Prick the pastry using a fork a few times.
- Gently heat the olive oil in a suitably sized pan and sauté the onion until soft, about 3 minutes then add the mushrooms and garlic and cook until the mushrooms are soft too and the liquid has been absorbed, about a further 3 minutes.
- Spread the mushroom mixture over the pastry avoiding the edges.
- Sprinkle the grated goat’s cheese evenly over the top and season the tart with the salt and pepper.
- Brush the edge with a little olive oil.
- Bake in the top of your oven for 15-20 minutes until pastry has risen, turned golden brown and cheese has melted.
- Serve with a green or tomato salad.
