Frying pan neapolitan pizza in a skillet. Pin title text overlay at top.

Frying pan Neapolitan pizza is a tasty and easy to make cheats pizza requiring no yeast and no oven. Make this excellent pizza in a pan in just 30 minutes!

Folks I think you're just going to love this versatile frying pan Neapolitan pizza recipe.

I mean have you ever been away camping or staying somewhere where you don't have an oven and really fancy a pizza?

Well this frequently happens to us and often we just end up driving to get a pizza from the nearest pizza restaurant or ordering one in.

Then I realised after some experimentation that it is possible to replicate a Neapolitan pizza, as long as you have a stove and a frying pan!

Frying pan pizza on a chopping board with a bowl of side salad and salt and pepper cellars at the top.

Ideally you do need to have a grill too so that you can place your pizza, once made in the pan, under it to melt your mozzarella cheese.

However if you don't have a grill, you can put a large lid on the frying pan / skillet whilst it's on your stove and that should do that trick.

The only difference there is that you won't get the grilled / slightly charred crust.

Even then this frying pan pizza is still an amazing and delicious substitute for not having an oven!

A traditional Neapolitan is a really simple pizza made with just fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil and has a thin and soft crust.

So that's why I choose basic toppings here and I also why I made my own really simple pizza dough using self-raising flour.

The frying pan pizza dough is made with no yeast and requires no proving so it can be cooked straight away.

I also made my own pizza sauce using a tin of chopped tomatoes for convenience.

You could easily just buy a jar of pizza sauce if you're short of time or don't want to make your own. I do recommend making your own though. It tastes so much fresher!

This is the skillet pan I use for cooking with.

The pan is of a classic design and made out of cast iron.

It's suitable for all types of cookers except microwaves.

As it's made of cast iron it can last a lifetime!

    • Freshly ground salt and pepper

    • Handful fresh basil leaves
    Metric - US Customary

    Instructions

    Pizza Sauce

    • Gently heat the olive oil in an oven proof frying pan / skillet. Add the onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until soft then stir in the garlic for a few seconds being careful not to burn.
    • Add the tin chopped tomatoes, simmer until thickened for about 10-15 minutes then season the sauce with the salt and pepper. Remove the sauce to a bowl. Wipe the pan dry.

    Pizza

    • Sieve the flour into a large bowl and mix in the olive oil. Gradually add the water to form a soft dough.
    • Remove the dough from the bowl and knead it a little. Scatter a little flour over the work surface and using a rolling pin, roll out the pizza to the size of your oven proof frying pan / skillet.
    • Place the rolled-out dough into the pan and gently dry fry over a medium heat for about 5 minutes until the bottom browns a little then turn over and cook for about another 5 minutes.
    • Turn on the grill to a medium temperature.
    • Spread your tomato sauce** over the base. Scatter the mozzarella over.
    • Place the oven proof frying pan / skillet under a grill and grill for 4 - 5 minutes until mozzarella has melted. Remove and scatter a few torn basil leaves over.
    • Remove from pan onto a wooden board to slice and serve.

    Notes

    * If you don't have time to make your own you could just buy a jar of pizza sauce. But I seriously recommend making your own as it doesn't contain all the additives a shop bought ones does and the nutritional label will be invalid.
** Any leftover homemade tomato sauce can be stored in your fridge for up to a week in a sealed jar or can be frozen.

We love this pizza when we're away. We call it our "camping" pizza. It's excellent after a day rambling about in the hills. You'll love it David. Thanks for your comment!

Oooh, Neil! I love this idea! I use my castiron skillet all the time, but have, (strangely), never cooked pizza in it! What a great idea! Neopolitan pizza is my favorite, too! (well, I say that today, but, pizza favorites change just about every time I see one.)?
